Mooching in Matara – SL#15.

Welcome again to everybody and the latest in my series of posts about my first ever trip to Sri Lanka in early 2014. Thankfully it was to prove to be the first of several and it has become one of my more frequent travel destinations, not least because it is absolutely brilliant and I love everything about it which is as good a reason as I can think of for returning.

What I wish I could also say in these preambles to each episode is something new and possibly even interesting but after 200+ posts, which amazes me as I did not think I was that productive, it becomes a little difficult. It is almost as difficult as finding new ways to write what I am going to put down next and which my many regular readers will no doubt groan at. It is my standard advice to new / accidental readers to read the whole adventure from the beginning, which you can do here.

Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside – SL#14.

Hello to one and all, welcome back to the 14th edition of my series about a trip to Sri Lanka for three months in the early part of 2014 and I’ll get it out of the way early by telling new readers that they may want to start at the beginning of the story which they can do here.

Now that that is out of the way, my regular readers will remember that in the previous post I promised you a day-trip and a day-trip you shall have. Please feel free to read on.

Fine fish and fun in the Fort – SL#13.

Well, well, post number 13 in this series already, I seem to be making good progress and I hope it will not prove to be unlucky. Fortunately I do not suffer from triskaidekaphobia and I know I have used that word before in another post but I just love it. Go on, write to me and tell me what your favourite words are. I love Q words and quotidian and quondam have both got to be up there but there are plenty of others.

I should tell you at the outset that you are in for a treat, well hopefully anyway. Yet again you are going to have one of Fergy’s “two for one” deals as it appears that very little happened on the first day except for a very fine meal. Please read on.

Day 2, Part 2 – Madrid #4.

Hello yet again, my usual greeting to one and all and thanks for all the views, comments etc. They are very much appreciated even if they still never fail to surprise me.

Also, I am going to make my usual suggestion to any new readers. This piece will make more sense if you start at the beginning of the series which you can do here. For the rest of you, well I am sure you know how to use the “read more” button by now.

Is Christmas really coming? – Madeira #5.

Good day one and all and welcome back. I do hope the New Year hangovers are long gone and you have returned to whatever form of normality is possible wherever you may be.

We are definitely plodding slowly but surely towards the conclusion of my little expedition to Madeira and I do even get out and about in this episode so if you want to read about it, you know what to do.

A day out on memory lane.

Good day to you one and all in whatever part of our sadly troubled world you may be. I trust the current virus pandemic is not affecting you too adversely although it is difficult to think of anywhere in the world, bar the Antarctic possibly, that has not been impacted and the Antarctic has problems enough of it’s own to worry about.

For the battle-hardened veterans that constitute my small band of regular readers, you know what to do, just skip the preamble and head South to the “main event” but for anyone who has stumbled upon this page for the first time by whatever means, a very warm welcome.

Building works, Beckton and a bloody bad back – Jubilee Greenway 7.

Hello once again and welcome to a somewhat ridiculous seventh day of walking the Jubilee Greenway which, considering it is only 35 miles long is pretty poor going but it was only ever intended as a means of getting a bit of exercise whilst I was fairly well grounded due to a succession of hospital appointments. If you haven’t read my previous posts about this jaunt then you may wish to start here. If you have read them, I thank you and let’s go for another walk.

Drunken Tsars, alder carrs and shut down bars – Jubilee Greenway 6.

Hello again and welcome to the sixth day of my walk along the Jubilee Greenway in London and when I say that you can probably see the problem already if you know about that particular designated footpath.

The Greenway is 60 km. long (35 miles in proper Imperial measurement) and was designed thus to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s 60th year on the throne in 2012.  Starting at Limehouse Basin and working anti-clockwise I had still only managed to get as far as Surrey Docks (now renamed Surrey Quays) in Rotherhithe which was probably two thirds of the total distance and there is simply no way it should have taken five days to achieve that modest distance.

My problem as that on the previous two days I had been “cut off in full flow” by my treacherous knees, hitherto very robust, which had now decided to make their presence felt in a very uncomfortable manner. I was probably taking a bit of a risk as it was only the next day but the perfidious patellae felt OK so I decided to chance it and if you want to join me, let’s go for a walk.

Roaming in Rotherhithe – Jubilee Greenway 5.

Welcome once again to the fifth day of my walk round the Jubilee Greenway in London. If you have not read the previous entries then you can start here. You will remember that my last day’s walking had been prematurely curtailed at Rotherhithe when my ageing knees had decided to play up after a fascinating day where I had walked from Westminster along the South Bank. Six days later and with my old bones suitably rested I was back at Rotherhithe Tube Station and ready for another day of discovery along this interesting route. If you’d like to join me, let’s go.

Suffragettes and spooks, Shakespeare and ships – Jubilee Greenway 4.

Hello again and welcome to the fourth instalment of my walk along the Jubilee Greenway , a 60km. footpath in London which was constructed from existing rights of way to celebrate Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012 even if it was hijacked by being linked to the London Olympics of that year. If you haven’t read my previous entries, you can start here.
