What, no football? Try an Ulster cooking class instead.
When I awoke early on Thursday the 28th of June I did not even have to pull the curtains back to know it was going to be another beautiful day as the sunlight was brightening the room even with them drawn and I could feel the temperature was warm already. As the day wore on I heard on the news that all four countries of the United Kingdom registered temperatures in excess of 30 degrees which is a rare enough event at any time never mind June.
I have mentioned that my appetite regularly goes AWOL but it appears to have returned with something of a vengeance now I am back here and so the daily fry-up was called for. I am getting quite good at knocking up this particular dish now and, dare I suggest, this one looks nearly good enough to eat. Continue reading “What, no football? Turn your backside to the wind!
Yet again I awoke unusually early on the morning of Wednesday 27th of June even beating my earlybird Father out of bed and it only took a glance out the window to tell me that it was going to be another beautiful day as forecast and as it was to prove.
I prepared breakfast for Father and took off out to the back garden where it was very hot by 0900. I read some of the book pictured which is The Ulster Canal by Brian Cassells which deals with the now disused waterway of that name. People who know me are aware that I adore canals and everything associated with them. There are a few travelogues heading this way when I wade my way through everything else I have to do here. The times they are a-changing.
Before I begin this entry, I should say that I fully appreciate that my few hardy readers are probably getting bored with the repetitious nature of the daily offerings. I am sorry about that but it really is the oft-quoted “circumstances beyond my control” as previously discussed.
Tuesday the 26th started OK weatherwise although a little more overcast than on previous days. My brother and sister-in-law called round in the morning and she told me that the Bulgarian holiday she had returned from late the previous evening had thrown up three cloudy / rainy days out of the seven. She would have done better to have stayed at home and sunbathed in the back garden but she enjoyed it all the same. Continue reading “The times they are a-changing.”

Sunday 24th of June was another scorching day and I woke before nine after not getting to sleep until about 0300 as I was reading.
I was not too hungry so just had a jumbo sausage roll for brekkie. I know you good people like to keep up with my breakfasting habits (I said with my tongue firmly in my cheek).
After midday it was time to settle down for the second England game of the campaign against Panama. Everyone expected England to win comfortably against a tiny nation of four million inhabitants who had amazed everyone by even qualifying but I think that only the most optimistic of England supporters would have seen the manner of the 6 – 1 win. The day I became a herpetologist.
Friday the 22nd was better weatherwise and I didn’t feel like having breakfast so you will be spared that particular report for this day.
With all the rest of the family away it was time to knuckle down to some housework as you can see and laundry and ironing was very much the order of the day. I am becoming quite domesticated here although I hate ironing with a passion. The afternoon was spent in the bar so I could use the internet and my mate Ritchie turned up with yet another beautiful guitar, this one a Fender semi-acoustic, so that was another bit of a play although nothing that could be classed as a jam. Even the barman got involved and proved to be a decent player himself. Things like that just happen in the Monty and are seen as quite normal. It is a great bar. After a shortish entry for the 18th it will be more of the same for the 19th as it was a day spent doing very much of the same, starting here with the obligatory breakfast image and readers who follow these pages will notice something odd. No fry-up? What’s all this then? Well, sometimes I just fancy a change and this is another favourite of mine which is toasted soda bread, Branston pickle and Coleraine cheddar cheese which is delicious and quite filling. Coleraine must be doing something right as they reported a growth in sales of 3.7% for the first quarter of 2018. I might buy shares. Continue reading “Three for the price of one.”

Saturday 16th came with the predicted sunshine and showers and the prospect of the first full-day schedule of the football (soccer) World Cup which I am interested in but that was not the sporting event I was most looking forward to which was considerably closer to home than Russia. Monday the 18th of June brought a new week but no new weather which was still not great considering what we had enjoyed previously.
I shall begin by clearing up a matter from a previous entry where I mentioned the Schvargo bar at the bottom of the Portadown and how I could not remember what it was previously called. I have now discovered it was the Classic which I should have known but I am getting old and it was a long time ago.
